Point cloud, DWG or BIM: how to choose the right source-data format

Point cloud, DWG or BIM: how to choose the right source-data format

After capture, customers often ask which output is better: a point cloud, DWG or BIM. There is no universal answer. The format should depend on who will use the data and what decision follows the handoff. The same object can be captured in a similar way and still require very different deliverables.

A point cloud is useful when the team needs actual geometry with minimal interpretation. It works well for checking, modelling, complex forms, facades, production zones and reconstruction. But a cloud needs skill and suitable software. If the receiving team does not open these files, the cloud should be supported by drawings, a model or an easy viewer.

DWG and PDF are useful when the task is about plans, facades, sections, elevations or control schemes. They remain a working language for many design and construction teams. The important point is not to expect a drawing to contain everything. It shows an agreed set of elements, not infinite detail.

BIM or a 3D model is needed when the team will coordinate spatial decisions, check clashes, plan reconstruction or pass a model to adjacent teams. The level of detail must be agreed carefully. A model that is too detailed can cost more and slow down work if the decision only needs main structures, openings and levels.

There is also a fourth layer that is often underestimated: visual records. Photos and 360 panoramas do not replace measurements, but they help explain condition, materials, nodes, temporary objects and access restrictions. For a distributed team, this can be the fastest way to return to the object without another visit.

A practical choice starts with the next action. If the team needs to draw, choose DWG and PDF. If it needs to check complex geometry, add a cloud. If it needs spatial coordination, use a model. If it needs to remember condition, add photos and 360 capture. A good handoff can be combined, but it should not be overloaded.
